Churma Laddu – A Traditional Sweet for Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganeshostv is a time of joy, devotion and delicious bhog for our beloved Ganapati bappa!! One of the most traditional and loved sweets offered during this festival is the Churma Laddu – made with roasted wheat, jaggery, ghee and fragrant spices. 

In this recipe, I will show you how to make authentic Churma Laddu at home – rich, flavourful, and perfect for prasad of festival celebrations. These laddus melt in the mouth and are packed with the goodness of ghee.. 

These laddu are not just a festive treat but a symbol of purity, love and devotion. prepared from simple pantry ingredients, they deliver a rich, nutty flavour with wholesome goodness of wheat and ghee. Soft inside and slightly grainy outside, Churma laddus are pyre bliss in every bite – an they are surprisingly easy to make at home!! 

Ingredients

For the dough – 
  • Wheat flour – 2 cups 
  • Fine semolina (Sooji) – 2 tbsp
  • Ghee – 1/4 cup
  • Water -as needed 
  • Ghee or oil – for frying 
  • Jaggery – 1 cup
For the churma mixture – 
  • Grated jaggery – 1 cup
  • Ghee – 1/4 cup
  • Cardamom powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Nutmeg powder – 1/8 tsp
  • Dry ginger powder – 1/8 tsp
  • Roasted poppy seeds – for coating 
 

Method

Step 1 – Prepare the dough 
  1. Firstly, take a mixing bowl. Add 2 cups of wheat  flour, and 2 tbsp fine semolina into it. 
  2. Then add melted ghee and rub it into the flour until crumbly. 
  3. Gradually add water to form a stiff dough (like puri dough) 
  4. Cover and rest for 10 minutes. 
Step 2 – Shape and fry 
  1. Now divide the dough into small portions and shape them into muthiyas (oval roll) or you can make peda shape.
  2. Then, heat a oil or ghee in a kadai over medium flame.
  3. Deep fry the muthiyas until golden brown and crisp.
  4. Drain on paper towels and let them cool.
Step 3 – Grind into Churma
  1. Once, cooled break the fried muthiyas into small pieces.
  2. Grind them coarsely in mixer or grinder. 
  3. The mixture should have a grainy texture, not fine powder.
Step 4 – Prepare the jaggery mixture 
  1. Add the ground churma into the melted gaggery 
  2. next add cardamom powder, nutmeg powder and dry ginger powder..
  3. Stir well until evenly coated.
  4. While still warm, shape the mixture into laddus
  5. Roll each laddus in roasted poppy seeds.
  6. Cool completely and store in a air tight jar. 
  7. Offer churma laddu as bhog or prasad during Ganesh Chaturthi.

Churma Laddu holds a special place in Indian culture — especially during Ganesh Chaturthi. Offering homemade sweets like this one is believed to bring prosperity and happiness.
