Ingredients
- Moong dal – ½ cup
- Chana dal – ½ cup
- Green chili – 1
- Ginger – ½ inch piece
- Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
- Red chili powder – ¼ tsp
- Cumin powder – ¼ tsp
- Black pepper p/w – 1/8 tsp
- Green peas – ¼ cup
- Chopped coriander – ¼ cup
- Curd – 1 tbsp
- Salt – as per taste
- Cooking soda – ¼ tsp
- Sugar – ¼ tsp
- Ghee – for garnishing
Method
Step 1: Soak the Lentils
- Wash ½ cup moong dal and ½ cup chana dal thoroughly under running water.
- Soak them in enough water for 4 hours or overnight. This helps the lentils swell and become easier to grind.
Step 2: Prepare the Batter
- Drain the soaked dal and transfer it to a blender.
- Add 1 green chili, ½ inch piece of ginger, and blend to a coarse paste (slightly grainy texture is okay).
- Transfer the paste to a mixing bowl.
- Add ¼ cup green peas, ¼ cup chopped coriander leaves, 1 tbsp yogurt, ¼ tsp turmeric powder, ¼ tsp red chili powder, ¼ tsp cumin powder, 1/8 tsp black pepper powder, ¼ tsp cooking soda, ¼ tsp sugar, and salt to taste.
- Mix everything well to form a smooth, spreadable batter.
Step 3: Prepare for Steaming
- Heat your steamer or a large pot with a steaming rack.
- Line idli molds or banana leaves with a little water or ghee to prevent sticking.
- Fill the molds with the prepared batter, leaving a little space at the top.
Step 4: Steam the Bhapiya
- Steam on medium heat for 15 minutes or until cooked through.
- To check, insert a toothpick or knife – it should come out clean.
Step 5: Garnish & Serve
- Remove the steamed bhapiya from molds.
- Drizzle a little ghee on top for extra flavor.
- Sprinkle a pinch of red chili powder (optional) and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
- Serve hot with green chutney, pickle, or as a wholesome breakfast.
This Moong & Chana Dal Bhapiya is a perfect way to start your day or enjoy a guilt-free snack. Its soft, flavorful texture combined with aromatic spices makes it a wholesome delight for your family
Tips & Tricks
- Soaking is key: Ensures smooth grinding and soft bhapiya. Overnight soaking works best.
- Texture: Slightly coarse dal paste gives a nice bite; don’t over-blend.
- Steaming: Medium heat ensures even cooking. Avoid high heat to prevent cracks.
- Optional flavor boosters: Add grated coconut or a pinch of hing (asafoetida) for extra aroma.
- Oil-free snack: Perfect for a healthy diet without any oil.
